And it was clear to see the squad had little to smile about as one by one they pulled into Carrington.
Club captain Harry Maguire pulled up his hood as he arrived to rehab the knock he picked up against Burnley last week.
Talisman Cristiano Ronaldo hid his eyes behind the sunvisor after deputising for Maguire in the Old Trafford shocker on Monday night.
His position at the Theatre of Dreams has been called into question by club legend Andy Cole.
The veteran striker suggested Ronaldo’s massive presence at the club is overshadowing fellow Portugal international Bruno Fernandes.

Luke Shaw slammed his team-mates following Monday’s woeful 1-0 defeat to Wolves — accusing them of lacking commitment, togetherness and motivation.
And SunSport revealed a well-placed United source has branded the club’s set-up a ‘shambles’.
A source said: “The players have their own cliques, one of which is making the others feel like they need to step up a level when it is the whole team that’s struggling.
“The players are demoralised.
“This is deja vu of the previous years when things went wrong.
“The fans probably think the players are not fit enough to put Rangnick’s plans into action.
“That is so untrue. Certain players have just lost that knack and desire.
“Plus, there is a belief within one section of the squad that some players get selected, regardless of their displays.
“So everything is a complete shambles.”
Reports suggest as many as SEVENTEEN first-team players are looking for a route out of the North West in the current transfer window or in the summer.
One man who is leaving at the end of the month is executive vice chairman Ed Woodward.
