Five Bundesliga stars who flopped in Premier League like Mkhitaryan and Werner as Sancho struggles at Man Utd

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs often spend big on Bundesliga stars but many have failed to impress in recent years.

Jadon Sancho is the latest big-name import from Germany to struggle in the Premier League.

The winger has scored just three goals and provided three assists in the league since his £73million summer arrival.

Sancho’s bad form has led to criticism from the likes of Paul Ince and Gareth Southgate omitted him from his latest England squad.

But the former Borussia Dortmund star is not the only player who has struggled to adapt after making the switch from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.

The Chelsea forward did win the Champions League in his first season at Stamford Bridge but even the most loyal of Blues fans would admit he has not delivered on his reputation.

Werner scored 95 goals in 169 games for RB Leipzig including 28 goals in his final season for the Bundesliga team.

The German was courted by Liverpool before joining Chelsea for £53m but has since scored a paltry 19 goals in 81 games for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and only once in the Premier League this season.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Another who made the switch from Dortmund to United, Mkhitaryan arrived with big expectations having previously been linked to Liverpool.

He failed to deliver in a United shirt however, scoring five goals – though one was his famous scorpion strike.

Mkhitaryan fell out with Jose Mourinho and lasted just 18 months at Old Trafford despite signing a four-year contract, with the Red Devils swapping him for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez in January 2018.

He did not last long at The Gunners either after scoring nine goals in 29 games, joining Roma in 2019 after his contract was mutually terminated.

Shinji Kagawa

Like Sancho and Mkhitaryan, Kagawa moved to Old Trafford from Dortmund but came with extra credit having been signed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Despite winning the Premier League in his debut season and becoming the first Asian player to score a Prem hat-trick, Kagawa fell out of favour under David Moyes.

He made just 14 league starts in 2013-14 before moving back to Dortmund for £6.5m the following summer, having failed to fit into United’s system due to the signing of Juan Mata.

Sebastien Haller

West Ham made Haller their record signing when he arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for £40m.

But 18 months and just 14 goals later Haller was sold at a big loss when he moved to Ajax for £20m.

He has since proven to be a big hit in the Netherlands with 46 goals in 59 games under Erik ten Hag and is the second-highest scorer in the Champions League this season.

Andre Schurrle

The German arrived as Jose Mourinho’s first signing in his second spell at Chelsea in the summer of 2013.

The forward cost £18m but failed to live up to the heights he showed in the Bundesliga, having scoring 15 league goals at Mainz in 2010-11.

He lasted only 18 months at Stamford Bridge after scoring just 14 goals in 65 appearances but Chelsea somehow managed to sell him for a profit after he joined Wolfsburg for £22m.
