David Goodwillie rejoins Clyde as Raith Rovers cut losses after controversy over signing of rapist

DAVID GOODWILLIE has left Raith Rovers and rejoined Clyde on loan.

The Kirkcaldy men were forced into a dramatic U-turn by a huge supporter backlash after snapping up the shamed star for £50,000 at the start of the window.

SunSport understands that the Broadwood side will confirm this afternoon that an initial loan deal between the two parties was struck prior to Monday evening’s deadline for temporary transfers.

And the 32-year-old is expected to make his switch back to Broadwood permanent in the summer.

The former Scotland man was Clyde captain prior to the contentious move to Kirkcaldy, scoring 109 goals over five years.

A civil case ruled in 2017 that Goodwillie and former Dundee United team-mate David Robertson raped Denise Clair after a drunken night out in Bathgate, West Lothian, in 2011.

Furious director Bill Clark, who is a lifelong Rovers fan, quit his role along with supporter-director Andy Mill.

Celebrity superfan Val McDermid said she was ending her association with the club over the incident.

Raith had originally said they were standing by their decision.

But widespread anger, condemnation and a swathe of resignations forced Raith into reversing their previous position.

The Kirkcaldy men said in a statement said they would be entering into a discussion with the player over the remainder of his contract.

He could feature for the Bully Wee again as early as this Saturday’s fixture against Falkirk.
