Christian Eriksen not just at Man Utd ‘for the logo’ as stats show he’s one of Prem assist kings despite two years away

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN has not joined Manchester United just for the prestige or one last payday.

The Danish playmaker is determined to play a big part in Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford rebuild — rather than sit on the bench and add the Red Devils to his CV.

After driving fellow new signing Lisandro Martinez into Carrington for their first training session yesterday, Eriksen said: “I want to come here and play, I haven’t come just for the logo.

“Speaking with the manager and hearing his ideas was great.

“With the ideas of the manager coming in and my conversations with him, I could see myself playing football here.

“That was ideal for me to decide to come to Manchester United. At the same time, it’s a very, very big club — if not the biggest.

And with Ten Hag having spent five years in charge of the Dutch giants before making his own Old Trafford switch, Eriksen is confident the pair will be an excellent match.

The 30-year-old, who has signed a deal until 2025, added: “My style of play fits in with his ideas and, hopefully, it’s something that will connect in a good and positive way.”

Eriksen has staged a remarkable comeback following his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener with Finland in June last year.

When a £50million switch from Spurs to Old Trafford collapsed in August 2019, Eriksen assumed his chances of joining United had all but disappeared.

However, after impressing with four assists and one goal from 11 games after joining Brentford for the second half of last season, his focus is on proving he belongs with the big boys.

He said: “It’s weird. I never thought it would actually happen, so to be a Manchester United player is very special.”

Eriksen is second on the Premier League assists chart since his debut in the competition in 2013 – despite having two years away!

As a creative star at United, Eriksen follows some of English football’s  greatest ever players.

Legendary stars Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona and Paul Scholes have all pulled the strings at Old Trafford.

But unfazed Eriksen added: “It means a lot. It’s a club with a lot of history and a lot of big, big players have been here.

“I’m a guy who wants to play football. I’m here to play and prove I can be on that list.”

Bees’ Danish boss Thomas Frank gave his compatriot the chance to return to the West London club.

United visit Brentford on August 13, six days after their Prem opener against Brighton at Old Trafford.

And despite rejecting the chance to extend his five-month Brentford stay, Eriksen revealed it will be an emotional return.

He said: “It’s going to be weird being on the other side. It will be fun to see the fans in the stadium. But playing as a United player will be very different, compared to being on the home side.

“I’m forever grateful for what they did. They showed interest and showed they cared from day one for wanting me back.

“They gave me the stage to perform. It’s a great football club.”

Eriksen has played six times for Denmark since his recall in March and is desperate to be at the World Cup.

He started all but one of their four Nations League matches last month so his chances look good if he can hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

Eriksen said: “From when I did my rehab last year, the aim and dream was to be back and in condition for the World Cup.
