‘Opportunity gone’ – Carl Froch sparks furious reaction by claiming Catterall was in ‘survival mode’ against Josh Taylor

CARL FROCH sparked a furious reaction on social media by claiming Jack Catterall went into ‘survival mode’ against Josh Taylor.

The Chorley fighter, 28, put on a tremendous performance in front of a Taylor-mad Scottish crowd in Glasgow.

Virtually everyone inside the OVO Hydro and watching on at home was convinced Catterall did enough to secure the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO light-welterweight world titles.

But after initially celebrating after the final bell, Catterall’s elation quickly turned to devastation when the scores were announced and the split decision went Taylor’s way.

Froch did insist Catterall deserved the win – but caused controversy by suggesting the challenger went on the back foot in the closing stages as the judges scored it 112-113, 113-112 and 114-111 to Taylor.

The former super-middleweight world champion tweeted: “If you go on survival mode for the last four rounds of a world title fight, the judges do not like it.

“Especially when you’re the challenger. Opportunity gone!”

Plenty flooded in with responses and trainer Dave Coldwell pointed out Catterall was well clear on points by that stage.

He replied: “Yep. Agree with that about coasting etc, but what about the other rounds in the bank? Fights are scored round by round.”

Froch added: “Absolutely, I’m not saying it couldn’t have gone the other way.

“I’m just saying he could’ve really made sure. Watching it at home, the wrong man got the decision.”

The punching stats clearly showed how Catterall dominated the showdown.

He threw 525 punches to Taylor’s 306 with both men landing just shy of a quarter – 120 for Catterall and 73 for Taylor.

Dillian Whyte simply said: “Disgusting.”

Carl Frampton commented: “I love Josh. I love Jack. But the wrong man got his hand raised.”

And after storming off and refusing to comment, Catterall broke his silence with an X-rated tweet just before 1am.

He wrote: “What a load of s***!”
