‘Not impressive’ – Boxing pros give their verdicts on Canelo’s points win over Golovkin including Eubank Jr

BOXING pros slated Canelo Alvarez’s trilogy triumph over fellow legend Gennady Golovkin.

And as fighters condemned the “unimpressive” contest, Brit Chris Eubank Jr urged GGG, 40, to step down to fight him at middleweight or retire.

Big names in boxing reckoned Golovkin rarely threatened in Canelo’s tame points victory by 116-112, 115-113, 115-113.

But Mexican Canelo, 32, revealed he needs surgery on his left hand ahead of a possible revenge bid against Dmitry Bivol.

Fight rivals, though, were quick to point the finger after he made it two wins and a draw from three bouts with Kazakh hero Golovkin.

Enzo Maccarinelli perhaps nailed the common verdict when claiming Canelo won far easier than the scorecards suggested.

Wales’ ex-world cruiserweight king posted: “9-3 and that’s being generous two warriors one still elite and one not anymore boxing is about timing.”

Former world welterweight champ Paul Malignaggi insisted: “Canelo always had this fight in his back pocket. Not impressive. Benavidez is the real test at 168 not a 40 year old GGG.”

And ex- super-middleweight title-holder Caleb Truax tweeted: “Those are three of the worst scorecards of all time.”

A third American, one-time light-middeweight king Sergia Mora, claimed: “Them scorecards being read put more worry in Canelo than the 12 rounds he just went with GGG!! 115-113! Wow!”

At least Eubank Jr looked forward rather than back as he suggested Golovkin should stop fighting at super-middleweight.

He posted: “GGG you had a great run. Come back down to middleweight & let’s fight for those belts you still have in December or just pass em over & I’ll look after them for the next couple years while you enjoy retirement… you earned it champ.”

But fans jabbed back at Eubank on social media – claiming GGG would still have his measure.

Replies such as “Have a day off son” and “boring” were accompanied by opinions like: “He would still beat you.”
