DEVIN HANEY beat George Kambosos Jr on Saturday night to become the new undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
The American, 23, won via unanimous decision in Melbourne, Australia to take Kambosos’ WBA, IBF, WBO and lineal crowns.

Haney took victory winning 116-112, 116-112, 118-110 on the judges scorecards Credit: AFP In doing so, Haney now holds all four world titles including the WBC belt and becomes the first boxer to unify the lightweight division since Pernell Whitaker in 1990 – and the first in the four belt era.
He is also just the eighth boxer in history to hold all four division belts – and the latest to do so since Canelo Alvarez beat Caleb Plant to unify the middleweight division in November.
The bout went the distance but it was a comprehensive win for Haney who scored 116-112, 116-112, 118-110 on the judges scorecards.
It means the WBA, IBF, WBO and lineal titles change hands for the second consecutive fight – with Kambosos only winning them in his last fight against Teofimo Lopez in November.

“I was comfortable. I was sticking to the game plan, the game plan was to go in and hit and not get hit and I did that for the majority of the fight.
“I took the last round off because I knew I was comfortably ahead, but I fought a good, smart fight.”
Haney controlled the fight throughout, using his jab effectively to frustrate Kambosos while evading punches.

But despite Haney’s unanimous victory Kambosos feels the fight was close and the Australian is keen to face the 28-0 boxer again – so could activate the rematch clause in the contract.
The 21-1 fighter said: “I want to take the best test, the hardest test and I’m going to give him full respect for his victory and let him have his time.
“We’ll do it again. I have to implement a few things but I thought the fight was very close.”
