Watch Thomas Muller’s horror miss to draw Germany level with England after going through one-on-one with Pickford

THOMAS MULLER missed a huge opportunity to draw Germany level in their Euro 2020 last 16 clash with England – a miss that ended up costing his side dearly.

The Bayern Munich hitman burst through on goal just a matter of moments after Raheem Sterling put Gareth Southgate’s side in front in the 75th minute.

Wembley fell deafly silent as the veteran striker strode towards Jordan Pickford’s goal, with many expecting the back of the net to bulge.

But thankfully for Three Lions fans across the world, Muller dragged his effort wide of Pickford’s far post.

It was an incredible miss – and means Muller has still never scored at a European Championships despite his prolific record for the Germans.

At the age of 31 – it’s quite possible it was the last chance for the 2010 World Cup golden boot winner.

A huge cheer erupted as the ball went out of play, which prompted a slew of England fans to take to Twitter to express their delight.

One said: “This is why Muller Corners are finished yoghurt.”

Another said: “Puller is finished.”

And another said: “Football gods don’t want him to score in the Euro.”

One remarked: “Yeah he’s retiring from the national team after this game.”

Muller’s miss proved to be costly as his side ended up going 2-0 down a matter of moments later.

England skipper Harry Kane put the tie to bed in the 86th minute with a header from just outside of the six-yard box.

Kane’s first goal of the tournament sparked pandemonium up and down the country and sent fans in attendance into a state of delirium.

Former England hitman Alan Shearer was over the moon after the final whistle, saying: “What an occasion.

“The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Well done to the England players, well done to Gareth Southgate because he had a plan before the game.

“Plenty of impatient people in this stadium were shouting for more forward players on the pitch but he had his game plan.

“He put Grealish on at the right time and they got a little bit of luck when they needed it at 1-0 when Muller went through, you’d expect him to score there.

“It was a very dominant performance and they did what they had to.”

Former Germany international Jurgen Klopp was quick to praise Southgate’s troops, saying: “This is England’s moment. Fair play.”

England will await the winners of Sweden and Ukraine’s last 16 clash at Hampden Park this evening.

Their quarter-final tie will take place in Rome on Saturday night, but Three Lions supporters won’t be allowed to enter the country as Italy is currently on the amber travel list.
