Wales fans urged NOT to travel to Euro 2020 group games in Baku and Rome over coronavirus fears

WALES fans have been warned not to travel to Euro 2020 due to Covid restrictions.

Thousands of Dragons fans were expected to travel to Baku and cheer on Gareth Bale and Co for the Group A opener against Switzerland on June 12.

But the Welsh FA said the UK Foreign Office has issued advice to urge Welsh fans, known as the Red Wall, to stay at home for the tournament.

It is a blow for Robert Page’s side, who also take on Turkey in the Azerbaijan capital.

Wales complete their Euro 2020 group stage with a game against Italy in Rome on June 20.

Azerbaijan and Italy are both currently on the UK’s amber list for international travel.

A Welsh FA statement read: “[We have] been liaising with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the UK Government concerning Cymru’s Euro 2020 matches in Baku, Azerbaijan on 12 & 16 June and the game in Rome, Italy on 20 June 2021.

“Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the FCDO has issued advice warning Cymru fans not to travel to Baku or Rome as Azerbaijan and Italy are on the UK Government’s Amber list.”

The FCDO are taking a cautious approach and have advised against all but essential travel to amber countries.

This plan of action is to prevent new Covid-19 variants from entering the UK.

The Welsh FA statement continued: “Whilst it is no longer illegal to travel, the FAW advises fans to make an informed choice about travelling to Baku and Rome for Euro 2020 considering the current information.

“Attending the matches will not be deemed as essential travel.

“For those fans who remain determined to travel despite the warnings, the FAW strongly advises that fans check that their travel insurance is still valid and fit for purpose.”
