THAT’S ALL FROM BRASILIA!
Colombia made it through to the Copa America semi-finals after beating Uruguay in a penalty shoot-out at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia.
Napoli star, and former Arsenal goalkeeper, David Ospina proved to be the hero of the night as he saved two penalties to help his country make the final four for the first time since 2016.
The two sides endured a goalless and quite hapless encounter that saw both Ospina and Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera enjoying a relatively uneventful evening.
Federico Valverde almost set Edinson Cavani up in front of open goal with a through ball from the right wing on 42 minutes but Yerry Mina got his foot on the way right in the nick of time.
Colombia then came close three minutes later as Duvan Zapata’s shot from a tight angle was saved by Muslera and Luis Muriel’s shot went widesoon after.
The second half was more interesting as Nahitan Nandez fired a curling effort from the right flank that forced an intense right-hand save from Ospina, who was caught off guard in the 50th minute.
Colombia then picked up the pace and came inches away from an opener after 73 minutes when Santos Borre delivered a crisp cross from the right flank and found Zapata whose header was denied by Muslera’s right leg.
However, none of the two sides were able to break the deadlock and so the game went straight to a penalty shoot-out.
Zapata, Davinson Sanchez, Mina and Miguel Borja all hit the back of the net with Muslera unable to make a single save.
Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez were on target for Uruguay but Ospina denied Jose Gimenez and Matias Vina’s spot-kicks and led his country to the semi-finals
