Tottenham confident of sealing £15m transfer for Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu despite manager wait

TOTTENHAM have set up a £15million swoop for Bologna’s Japanese star Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Spurs transfer team are lining up the deal with the Italian outfit ahead of a managerial appointment.

And they are confident of landing the highly-rated defender.

Tomiyasu, 22, has been a regular for the Serie A side since 2019 after first playing in Belgium with Sint-Truiden.

He is desperate to come to the Premier League.

Spurs think Tomiyasu would be a top player for them and improve a defence that often struggled last season.

He is also relatively cheap and his wage demands will not scare them.

The deal should happen shortly, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy originally keen to hire a new manager before revealing the transfer to their fans.

Tomiyasu has won 23 caps for the versatile ace.

He can play right-back but is earmarked for the centre of defence by Spurs.

The only snag is that he has just been named in the Japanese Olympic squad for the Tokyo Games — and that could rule him out of club matches at the start of the new season.

His arrival would let Spurs move out some of their current crop.

Wales centre-half Joe Rodon could be sent out on loan, while Matt Doherty is also potentially on the way out.
