  • GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL!!!

ALBA OPENS THE SCORING FOR SPAIN!!!

    BRILLIANT GOAL!!!

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    6. Torres breaks down the right flank and tries to get the beating of experienced left-back Rodriguez.

But Rodriguez times his tackle to perfection, sweeping the ball out of play.

Spain do, however, have a corner.

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    5. Koke tries to win Spain a free-kick deep in Switzerland territory but referee Oliver isn’t having any of it.

    Switzerland break on the counter.

And Zakaria plays a slick one-two with Widmer down the right-hand side.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder looks to break into the penalty area.

But his final touch lets him down and the ball is cleared.

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    4. Spain are seeing lots of the ball in the opening minutes of the game, as expected.

Switzerland are not keen to press high up the pitch in an attempt to win the ball.

The Swiss would rather maintain shape and wait for the perfect moment to strike.

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    3. Pedri is looking to pull the strings in Spain’s midfield, bouncing the ball off his Barca team-mate Busquets.

He’s a terrific little player. Very young, but looks incredibly comfortable at the top level.

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    2. Shaqiri breaks forward into Spain’s half for Switzerland, and the crowd lets up a roar.

The Liverpool man manages to get a shot off, but his effort takes a deflection and doesn’t trouble the goalkeeper.

  • SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN

    1. Spain get the game underway in Saint Petersburg, Russia!

Enrique’s men have looked strong in the last two games against Slovakia and Croatia.

But their defence was breached three times against 2018’s World Cup finalists in the last round.

Switzerland, on the other hand, pulled off the shock of the tournament against France.

And they’re looking to do it again!

  • PEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

AND WE’RE OFF IN SAINT PETERSBURG!

    HERE WE GO!

  • HERE COME THE TEAMS

Both sets of players are making their way out onto the pitch at the Krestovsky Stadium.

Liverpool’s Shaqiri captains Switzerland, and they’re wearing their home colours of red.

And Barcelona’s Busquets captains Spain for his former Barca boss Enrique.

The Spaniards are in their white away shirt.

Spain will be hoping to be more defensively solid after letting in three goals in the last round.

But defender Laporte isn’t too worried about it.

He said: “You mention letting in three goals, but one of them was our own error – nothing we can do to prevent that.

“One of their other goals was terrific – just like we did brilliantly in ours! That’s football.

“The key lies in our specific, well-defined style of play.

“We’ve developed it and once we have begun to score goals, we simply have to follow that line of performance.”

Cue the national anthems……… Spain to go first!

  • CITIZEN

Ferran Torres has been involved in eight goals in his last nine appearances in all competitions for Spain (7 goals, 1 assist).

Torres has scored in his last two games at the European Championship, with no Spanish player ever scoring in three in a row in the competition.

  • DARK HORSES

This is Switzerland’s fourth quarter-final appearance in a major tournament (World Cup and EURO), and their first in the European Championship.

The Swiss have lost each of their previous three such games – 3-2 vs Czechoslovakia (1934), 2-0 vs Hungary (1938) and 7-5 vs Austria (1954).

  • SURPRISE PACKAGE

Switzerland’s Haris Seferovic has scored three goals in his last two games at the European Championship, having netted just one in his first 13 appearances at major tournaments (World Cup/EURO).

The only Swiss player to score in three consecutive appearances within a major tournament was Josef Hügi in the 1954 World Cup.

  • MAIN MAN

Álvaro Morata has had more shots (15) and shots on target (8) than any other Spanish player so far at EURO 2020, and he’s also Spain’s joint highest scorer at this tournament (2).

However, the other two players with two goals for Spain (Pablo Sarabia and Ferran Torres) have had fewer shots (13) and shots on target (7) combined than Morata.

  • BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK

Spain have become the first team in European Championship history to score 5+ goals in consecutive games.

They hadn’t scored more than four goals in any of their first 42 matches in the competition.

Spain are averaging 73.4% possession and have a passing accuracy of 89.5% at EURO 2020 so far.

Both figures are their highest on record in a single edition of the European Championship (since 1980).
