David Beckham is keen to land Phil Neville as Inter Miami boss

Neville is understood to have held preliminary discussions with the Major League Soccer side about the position.

The Lionesses’ boss, 43, revealed he would step down as national boss in July after this summer’s Euros.

SunSport understands he has held positive talks with old Manchester United mate Becks over taking charge of his new franchise.

Former Uruguay striker Alonso led Miami to a tenth place finish in the Eastern Conference in their first ever MLS season last year.

They were knocked out of the MLS Cup play-offs in the ‘play-in’ round.

Miami announced they had parted ways with the 45-year-old and managing owner Jorge Mas said: “On behalf of the organisation, I want to thank Diego for his hard work and dedication during our inaugural season and wish him the best in his future endeavours.

“This was a difficult year and a very tough decision for everyone, but we believe it is the right step for the club.

“We have great expectations for Inter Miami in the short and long term.”

Beckham co-owns the franchise and he is also part owner of League Two side Salford City with Neville and his brother Gary.

Following his Miami exit, Alonso said: “Going through the journey of this inaugural season with Inter Miami has been an incredible experience, and I am thankful to the ownership group for the opportunity.

“I want to thank the staff for their work and friendship, the players for their efforts on the field, and especially the fans for their constant support throughout the year. I wish everyone the best this upcoming season.”

Miami won just seven of their 23 matches, losing 13 times, putting Alonso’s future in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, Neville led England to the 2019 Women’s World Cup semi-finals and helped his side win the SheBelieves Cup since taking over in 2018.

Dutch legend Sarina Wiegman will take over as Lionesses manager from the summer.
