Newcastle boss Steve Bruce still ‘badgering away’ to seal Joe Willock loan transfer return from Arsenal

STEVE BRUCE insists Newcastle are still ‘badgering away’ to bring Joe Willock back to Tyneside.

The 21-year-old headed to St James’ Park back in January on loan after struggling for action under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Willock went on to produce a number of impressive displays to help the Magpies secure their top-flight status.

And the England Under-21 ace also scored in the last SEVEN games of the season.

Toon boss Bruce confirmed in May that he wanted to keep the midfielder on a permanent basis.

And he remains adamant that the club still want the midfielder to return.

Speaking after his side were beaten 1-0 by non-league York City on Sunday in their first pre-season friendly, he said: “Until Arsenal make a decision we’ll keep monitoring.

“We’d love to do something but it’s still their call.”

Arteta was believed to be open to letting Willock go at the beginning of the summer transfer window.

Now the Spaniard has changed his stance after watching the youngster closely since he returned for pre-season.

Meanwhile, Bruce also confirmed Andy Carroll has left Newcastle for a second time after his contract expired last month.

He said: “I had a conversation with Andy. I think he wants to go and play.

“I wish the lad all the best. I hope it goes well for the rest of his career.

“He’s certainly been a big help to me in the last couple of years, that’s for sure.”
