Man Utd star Mason Greenwood’s England omission revealed with Gareth Southgate keeping him away from Under-21s

MASON GREENWOOD will be kept away from England Under-21s — so Gareth Southgate can turn him into an international star.

The Manchester United forward, 19, was a surprise omission from the squad for the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

But boss Southgate says Greenwood will gain more by staying with his club than linking up with the kids.

He said: “Normally I don’t get involved in the Under-21s but I think he’s beyond that.

“I want to take a little bit more control of his development internationally.”

The United striker was expected to return to the international fold after being sent home in disgrace from England duty in September 2020.

The youngster broke Covid rules by inviting girls back to his hotel room while away in Iceland.

He said at the time: “Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.

“”t was irresponsible of me to break the Covid-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

“In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.

“Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

“I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.”
