Man Utd fans pick Paul Scholes over Bruno Fernandes with icon voted top playmaker despite Portuguese star’s better stats

MOST Manchester United fans still prefer Paul Scholes to Bruno Fernandes, despite the Portuguese sensation’s better stats.

SunSport polled Red Devils fans on which playmaker they’d rather have at their peak.

And, after nearly 7,000 votes were cast, Scholes was the overwhelming favourite.

Of voters, 61 per cent chose the Class of 92 star over Fernandes, with just 21 per cent opting for United’s current main man.

The remaining 18 per cent couldn’t split the pair.

In terms of pure creation, however, Fernandes’ stats reign supreme – although admittedly Scholes became a far different player in his latter years.

Scholes, now 46, managed 107 goals 499 Premier League appearances for United between 1994 and 2012.

He also added 55 assists, giving him an average of 223 minutes per goal/assist.

Fernandes, on the other hand, is far more likely to directly contribute to a goal, owing to the kind of player he is.

The 26-year-old has already netted 19 Premier League goals in his short Old Trafford career, also laying on 14 assists.

This gives United’s current No18 an average of 76 minutes per goal or assist.

Irrespective of whether they prefer him to Scholes just yet, Fernandes is definitely a current favourite of the Stretford End, having played a huge role in firing United into the title conversation.

And Scholes himself even insisted that Fernandes is better than he was.

He told Man United’s official website: “He’s better than me. He’s different to me. He scores more goals than me, he creates more goals than me.

“I’d like to play with him, probably behind him would be alright. But no, he’s been sensational, a big difference.

“I think before he came to the team, United could hardly create a chance with some of the stuff they were playing, but now they look like they can score three, four or five goals every game.”
