But the Reds roared back through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, before James Maddison restored the two-goal cushion with a thunderbolt from 30 yards.
Diogo Jota pulled back another goal after the break and it was deep into stoppage time before Minamino forced the leveller to send the game to penalties.
Caoimhin Kelleher was the shootout hero for Klopp’s men, saving twice and allowing Jota to win it from the spot in sudden death.

Brendan Rogers reacts
When speaking to BBC Sport Leicester, Rogers said: “I’ve got nothing but praise for the players tonight.
“We want to compete in every competition.
“If you give everything and go out you can accept that.
“We did that tonight but couldn’t see it through.”
He added: “The players have given everything thrown at us in the game.
“Injuries, the referee was awful… he gave us nothing and was one of the worst I’ve seen for a long time.”
