Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa to wait until end of season to start contract extension talks as club battle Prem survival

LEEDS boss Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed he will wait until the end of the season before beginning talks about a contract extension.

The 65-year-old has taken his spell at Elland Road on a season-by-season basis, extending his stay at the club prior to the start of the last two campaigns.

And while Leeds fans are adoring the football his team are playing in the Premier League, The Mirror have reported that he remains committed to his stance about contract talks not beginning until the end of the season.

He said: “I’m very comfortable living and managing in England.

“Annual contracts do not mean I am not open to staying here longer.”

Chairman Andrea Radrizzani is expected to back Bielsa again in the transfer market in the summer in a bid to keep him at the club.

Bielsa, who has been praised for returning Leeds to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years, has caught the eye of many top flight fans so far this season.

The South American’s free-flowing, attacking football has seen his team score 32 goals and concede 35 in just 19 games, making them one of the most exciting outfits in the league.

Leeds picked up a big win on Tuesday night when they beat Newcastle 2-1 at St James’ Park.

The victory moves them up to 12th in the table, with a record of eight wins, two draws and nine defeats.

Bielsa’s side are also a healthy 13 points from the relegation zone, but those within the club are refusing to get complacent as they are still 14 points off 40, a tally widely considered to be the benchmark for avoiding the drop.

Leeds now face a tough run of fixtures, with Leicester, Everton, Crystal Palace and Arsenal their next four games.
