Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Mourinho has previously voiced his interest in coaching a national side.

And Santos, Portugal’s most successful coach of all time, has given compatriot Mourinho his blessing to replace him when his contract expires.

Lisbon-born Santos, 66, guided Portugal to their first major trophy when they triumphed at Euro 2016.

The former Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Greece coach has been in his post for seven years.

Santos told Radio Renascenca: “When I was invited to take the job, the Portuguese FA president Fernando Gomes told me he wanted me for his project.

“That project lasts until 2024, and I committed myself to him until that time.

“But after then I will think about what I want to do.

“Jose Mourinho would be a good replacement for me.

“Portugal has some good coaches, with plenty of ability, who would do a good job of replacing Fernando Santos.”

Setubal-born Mourinho managed Benfica, Uniao de Leiria and Porto before moving to Chelsea in 2004.

He led the Blues to eight trophies in two spells, won three prizes with Manchester United and enjoyed domestic and European success with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
