Jamie Carragher claims Man City got priorities wrong by signing Jack Grealish in £100m transfer ahead of Harry Kane

JAMIE CARRAGHER reckons Manchester City got their priorities wrong by signing Jack Grealish ahead of Harry Kane.

The Liverpool legend does think Grealish, who City signed for a Premier League record of £100million from Aston Villa, was a good buy.

But the Sky Sports pundit adds that the Premier League Champions did not need the English midfielder as much as they need a prolific striker like Kane.

And Carragher believes that could end up being the difference between Pep Guardiola’s side retaining their league crown or not.

He said: “Signing Grealish will not be the difference between City defending their title or finally winning the Champions League this season.

“Signing Kane, or a world-class striker capable of scoring between 20 or 30 goals this season, might be.”

Carragher pointed to the Eithad giants 1-0 loss against Tottenham last week as proof of how much they’re in need of an attacker.

Writing in The Telegraph, he added: “That was clear in last weekend’s defeat to Spurs.

“Despite that, the Premier League champions pushed ahead with the Grealish deal while waiting for events to materialise on Kane’s future.”

And this is why Carragher thinks his City have done their business backwards.

What’s even more confusing for Carragher is why Guardiola’s side didn’t secure Kane’s services at the start of the summer when they clearly had the cash.

The 43-year-old said: “City obviously had the funds to buy Kane for £150 million at the start of the summer but decided to match the £100 million clause for Jack Grealish.

“At the moment, it looks like they got their priorities wrong.

“Grealish is a fine player. He will do well at City. I understand why he wanted to move.

“What I cannot get my head around is why City did not attend to their more pressing needs first.”

Despite Carragher’s worries, Guardiola claims he doesn’t mind if the proposed Kane move falls through.

Asked if he would be content with his squad if the transfer window closed today, he said: “Absolutely, more than happy.

“It is the same team, except Sergio [Aguero] for Jack Grealish, that we had last season.”
