Harry Kane and Son Heung-min need to win trophies with Tottenham or will regret it in future years, says Glenn Hoddle

HARRY KANE and Son Heung-min NEED to win trophies with Tottenham or risk regretting it in future, claims Glenn Hoddle.

The deadly duo helped Spurs to another 3-1 win at Sheffield United yesterday as Jose Mourinho’s side push towards a Premier League title charge.

The telepathic strike-force have also helped them to a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley in April.

But with Tottenham’s last silverware coming in that competition back in 2008, Hoddle believes they need to win more trophies to fully look back on their careers with the club with fondness.

And the Spurs legend says despite being shocked at Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking in November 2019, Mourinho’s record speaks for itself.

The Amazon Prime Video pundit said: “It was a slight surprise when he did it. Pochettino was doing a great job up to a point, but it didn’t look like silverware was coming.

“I think that was the big negative towards Tottenham, they look a good side but still haven’t won anything, that’s what other fans would have against them.

“As a club they’ve gone through a barren period. We needed to win silverware to be succesful.

“Harry Kane, whatever he does as a player for Tottenham, or Son or Dier, you want to go back in years to come with a picture on the wall with you holding a cup up.

“People are not going to say ‘do you remember those years when we got to the top four every year for three years?’.

“You want to win things, you’re a professional footballer. I think Daniel Levy has got to be applauded, he reacted quickly.”

He added: “There was a few other clubs would have been going for Jose and he reacted early and pounced.

“He knows the winning way and he does it his way. It’s not as beautiful to the eye, but it’s not a beauty competition.

“Any silverware, the cup, the league, you’ve got to be in there to win it, and that’s his mentality.

“He doesn’t care whether it’s a League Cup or Europa League. He loves silverware and he’s installing that into the players, you can see it.”

Hoddle reckons Tottenham’s squad is perfect for his counter-attacking style – but fans will only put up with it while they’re still winning.

He added: “He really does love the squad he’s got because he’s got players who can do the defensive side of his game that he wants against the big teams.

“And he’s got players you can play on the counter like Son and Kane. He’s got the balance correct to do it that way.

“The fans at Tottenham are used to a certain style. If you’re winning Spurs fans will put up with this style, there’s no doubt about it.

“Without a crowd being in it’s helped Jose get his style across. Now they’re winning, everyone is going to buy into it.

“There will be some sticky moments this season, and that’s when this style of football might be questioned, but it’s not a beauty pageant.”

And Hoddle thinks Gareth Bale needs to pick up his form after a dismal start to his season-long loan spell from Real Madrid.

He added: “We haven’t seen the best of Bale. I think Bale should roll his sleeves up and say ‘Look, I really should be fit by now’ and show what he can do.

“That will help the counter-attack as well. He’s got the best of both worlds at the moment, and that’s why they’re a dangerous team.”

Amazon Prime Video will be broadcasting West Ham’s match with Burnley at 3pm on 16 January.
