Ex-Chelsea star Eden Hazard is ‘sad’ at Real Madrid amid Newcastle transfer links, claims Roberto Martinez

FORMER Chelsea forward Eden Hazard is ‘unhappy’ at Real Madrid, according to Belgium national team manager Roberto Martinez.

The 30-year-old arrived at the Bernabeu in 2019 but has failed to make any sort of impact at the Spanish giants.

Fitness issues and injuries have plagued the Belgian for two years as he has shown none of the form he lit up Stamford Bridge with for seven campaigns.

In 54 games for Real Madrid Hazard has managed just five goals and has only started four LaLiga games so far this season.

As a result, he has been linked with a move to Newcastle following the Magpies’ Saudi takeover.

However, Martinez hopes Madrid will stick by their man while he goes through a difficult period of his career.

Speaking on COPE’s show El Partidazo, he said: “Hazard is medically in his best moment since he arrived at Real Madrid.

“He is sad in football terms, this is the first time that he is experiencing this situation.

“He is a player who has always led winning projects and now he doesn’t have that role, but he is a footballer of exceptional talent and that is never lost, you have to have faith in him.”

Hazard netted 85 goals in 245 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and two Europa Leagues.

And there have been reports he could be set for a return to England’s top flight as Newcastle are thought to be interested in him.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti insists he will not standard in Hazard’s way if he wishes to exit the club.

The former Chelsea manager said: “Never in my career as a coach have I forced a player to stay when they want to leave.

“In my own personal opinion I don’t have any doubts about that.”
