Bruno Fernandes breaks Frank Lampard’s record to become highest-scoring Prem midfielder EVER with 28th goal of season

BRUNO FERNANDES has beaten Frank Lampard to a special goalscoring record.

The Manchester United star netted his 28th goal in all competitions this term with a strike in Thursday’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool.

And that means Fernandes now has the record by a Premier League midfielder for most goals in a single season in all competitions.

It is more than the 27 goals Lampard scored for Chelsea in the 2009-10 campaign.

The England icon, who hit double figures in 10 of his 13 seasons at Stamford Bridge, reached the incredible tally under Carlo Ancelotti.

Lampard’s 27 goals – and 18 assists – fired Chelsea to a stunning Premier League and FA Cup Double.

He netted them in just 51 games, and it was also the fifth consecutive season Lampard struck at least 20 goals in all competitions.

However, his record has now gone to Fernandes, who has 28 goals in 55 appearances this term.

The former Sporting man now has a total of 39 strikes in just 77 games for the Red Devils since joining them in January 2020 – but still has some way to go to catch Lampard’s overall tally.

Lampard is the Premier League’s fifth-highest scorer of all-time, with 177 goals, and is also Chelsea’s record scorer with 211 goals.

He also has the single season Premier League record, with 22 also in 2009-10 – Fernandes (on 18) will have to score five in his final two games to beat it.

Fernandes has another string to his bow, having been directly involved in 44 goals in 50 Premier League games for United.

Only Eric Cantona and Robin van Persie contributed more in their first 50 games for the Red Devils with 46 and 45 respectively.

But Fernandes still remains a little way off his best-ever goal-scoring tally in a single season.

The attacking midfielder struck 33 goals in 53 games for Sporting in the 2018-19 campaign, putting him on the radar of United and other elite sides.

But Fernandes still has three games left this term to reach that tally, while also extending his lead as the Prem’s best midfield goal machine.

United take on Fulham next Tuesday before travelling to Wolves the following Sunday for the last game of the Premier League campaign.

Fernandes’ biggest match in a United shirt will then come just three days later when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men take on Villarreal in the Europa League final.
