Barcelona 1 Boca Juniors 1 (2-4 on pens): Xavi’s side lose Maradona Cup clash as giants pay tribute to Argentine legend

BARCELONA were beaten 4-2 on penalties by Boca Juniors as the South American outfit claimed the Maradona Cup in a match paying tribute to the legendary Argentinian.

After 90 minutes the game – which was played at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – finished 1-1 as Boca came from behind to peg Barcelona back.

Ferran Jutlga Blanc gave Xavi’s men the opening goal five minutes into the second half with a venomous strike into the top corner.

But Boca levelled 13 minutes from time when full-back Frank Fabra pulled the ball back perfectly for Exequiel Zeballos to tuck home.

The match then went to penalties, with former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo finding the back of the net for Boca before Dani Alves levelled for Barcelona.

Boca scored their next two spot kicks to go 3-2 up but then goalscorer Blanc missed for Barca to hand the Argentine team the advantage.

Aaron Molinas made it 4-2 to put the pressure on 22-year-old Guillem Jaime’s shoulders.

And he went on to miss his penalty as Boca celebrated a sensational win over a struggling Barcelona.

Maradona played 58 times for Barca between 1982 and 1984, scoring 38 goals in 58 games.

That spell came after his one year with Boca in 1981 where he netted 28 times in 40 appearances.

Following a lengthy stint at Napoli and spells at Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys, he returned to Boca for the final three years of his career in 1995, scoring seven times in 31 games.

Maradona’s former club Boca finished fourth in this year’s Primera Division, with rivals River Plate winning the title.
