But the Midlands side face competition from newly promoted Norwich and Scottish giants Celtic, according to Norwegian outlet VG.
King has struggled to impress at Everton after joining on a short-term deal from Bournemouth in January.
The Toffees have decided not to extend his stay at Goodison but several clubs are still keen on him.
King was understood to be earning £45,000-a-week at Everton.
Former Manchester United trainee King would likely have to settle for a backup role at Villa Park too.
Watkins scored 14 goals and managed to break into England’s squad as he led Dean Smith’s attack with aplomb.
Celtic were said to be keen on King when Eddie Howe was reportedly being lined up to take over as boss.
King enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career when he worked under Howe at Bournemouth.
