MATCH REPORT
GUIDO RODRIGUEZ headed Argentina back on course in Copa America, Sunni Upal writes.
The Real Betis defender turned home Lionel Messi’s cross to seal all three points against Uruguay.
And it was a first win for Lionel Scaloni’s men having been held by Chile in their opener.
Messi and Co had drawn three straight games this month taking in their two World Cup qualifiers before the tournament against Chile and Colombia.
Rodriguez, 27, was drafted in to help shore up the leaky backline with three changes made to the back four.
But he popped up at the other end in the 12th minute, rising highest at the far post to score.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Lionel Messi has scooped the award tonight.
That’s fair enough. He set up the winner and pretty much everything in an attacking sense seemed to go through him tonight.
STATE OF PLAY
So Argentina join Chile on four points after two games.
Paraguay are in third place having won their only game so far against Bolivia.
Uruguay are pointless at this stage having only played one game – and Bolivia are bottom with two losses so far.
Four teams go through to the quarter-finals, so no need to panic for Uruguay just yet.
FT: ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
A massive win for Argentina against their old rivals.
It’s a first win in the tournament and ends their run of three straight draws in all competitions.
Guido Rodriguez’s header was the difference. Uruguay not good enough and start their Copa America with a loss.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPP!
That’s it – Argentina win by the odd goal in Brasilia.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
90, Some handbags between Otamendi and Suarez.
It’s just what Argentina want, killing time and not letting Uruguay get at them as time ticks away.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
90, FIVE minutes of added time.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
88, It’s Argentina looking most likely to score the next goal here.
Di Maria has been impressive since he came on – a real livewire.
Not seen anything from Suarez or Cavani in the last 10 minutes or so.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
86, Messi looks so frustrated.
He can’t quite make half a yard for a shot on the edge of the area.
Not once but twice he was crowded out just when he thought he had an opening to pull the trigger.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
81, Messi with a dangerous looking free-kick on the edge of the area after being brought down by Diego Godin.
He tries to go low and hard, but it’s straight into the wall and Uruguay live to fight another day.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
79, The ball is literally glued to Lionel Messi’s feet on the edge of the area with Uruguay players terrified of sticking out a leg.
Messi laid it off to Di Maria to hit in the end, but it was blocked as Uruguay got men back.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
75, Suarez goes for the bicycle kick from a cross… but it’s a long way over the bar.
He puts his head in his hands, it’s not been his day so far.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
71, Decent spell of possession for Argentina here for the first time in this half.
It’s been a backs to the wall job for them in the second half but they’re getting some respite here.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
69, So close for Uruguay.
Can cross from the left is agonisingly out of reach of both Cavani and Suarez and Argentina breather a sigh of relief.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
62, And we have another booking. Torreira is shown a yellow card for bringing down Palacios as the Argentine tried to spin clear and break.
Argentina increasingly now playing on the counter-attack.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
57, Uruguay now on the front foot and Argentina are being forced to soak it up a bit.
Suarez, Cavani and De La Cruz threatening to link up on the edge of the area and looking increasingly dangerous.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
55, Suarez is in the wars a bit.
He gets a bang on the back of the head and goes down for a while.
That tells me that Suarez is warming to the task, seeing him like that.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
52, A double change for Argentina – Martinez and Lo Celso off, Palacios and Correa on.
Lo Celso looked to be limping a bit and was on a yellow card too.
Scaloni also can’t be happy with how this second half has started and wants to see change.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
49, Danger signs for Argentina.
Uruguay have started this second half better and Suarez almost wriggled free on the edge of the box.
He received the ball from Cavani and spun to lose his marker but was crowded out.
Already much improved from Uruguay.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
47, And we have our first booking of the night.
It’s for Lo Celso after a foul on Torreira.
A Tottenham player on an Arsenal player – no love lost there.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
Right then, we’re ready for the second half.
One change for Uruguay as Bentancur is off and Fernandez is on.
Suarez gets us underway again in Brasilia.
HT: ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
And that’s the half-time whistle.
Guido Rodriguez’s 12th-minute header is the difference at the break and, on the balance of play, it’s a deserved lead.
But Uruguay are fuming at the non penalty for an alleged foul on Cavani.
Suarez is continuing his protests as he heads down the tunnel.
Let it go, Luis.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
45, Three minutes of added time at the end of the first half in Brasilia.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
35, 10 minutes until the break and things have calmed down a bit – the game has drifted a bit.
Argentina looking dangerous still when they go forward with Messi, Martinez and Lo Celso in particular.
But Uruguay growing into the game and starting to see more of the ball.
ARGENTINA 1-0 URUGUAY
31, Looking back at that penalty shout – it’s such a tight call.
There looked to be contact from one angle but other camera shots showed it was inconclusive.
Escape for Argentina but really it must be a worry for them in defence.
