Toniutti guides Zaksa to victory in Poland’s PlusLiga

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 9, 2020 – France’s star setter Benjamin Toniutti masterminded a significant win as ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle downed Indykpol AZS Olsztyn 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 25-27, 25-17) on the road, to leapfrog Verva Warsaw Orlen Paliwa for first place in the standings of Poland’s PlusLiga over the weekend.

ZAKSA took advantage of a shock defeat for Warsaw in the hands of Trefl Gdansk 3-0 (25-23, 26-25, 25-19), which secured Gdansk their spot in the quarterfinals of the playoffs, with two rounds of play remaining in the Regular Season.

The 30-year-old setter was named MVP of the game for his contribution to ZAKSA’s win – his sixth such award this season, which brings him to the top of the list, on par with Grzegorz Lomacz of PGE Skra Belchatow, Piotr Nowakowski of Warsaw and Rafal Faryna of MKS Bedzin.

Toniutti is in action again on Wednesday, when ZAKSA host Russia’s Kuzbass Kemerovo in the return leg of their European Champions League quarterfinal. The French international was instrumental in the Polish side’s 3-2 win in Russia in the first leg, last week.
