Lausanne, Switzerland, January 31, 2020 – The FIVB Communication Commission finalised plans for the 2020 volleyball and beach volleyball seasons when it met via videoconference this week.
The meeting focused on updating members of the Commission about the recent changes within the FIVB, including the introduction of the new World Ranking system and the principles for the 2021-2024 Olympic cycle calendar. The Commission also discussed the exciting plans for beach volleyball in the coming years.
Preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were also high on the agenda, as the Commission discussed the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) plans for camera placement and session scheduling, both focused on ensuring the best fan experience for millions watching the Games from all over the world.
Digital innovations and trends were also discussed at the meeting. The FIVB enjoyed a huge increase in numbers on its digital channels in 2019, following a clear strategic focus of creating more interesting and engaging video content for new and existing fans. Athlete-related content proved to be a major hit for the FIVB’s target audiences, and the 2020 digital strategy continues to put athletes at its core.
During the meeting, FIVB Secretary General Fernando Lima said:
“Last year was ground breaking for us; we achieved significant results both on our digital platforms and in our TV numbers. During 2019, the FIVB registered more than 11 billion social media impressions. In addition, we have more than doubled our audience on Facebook and are now the third most followed International federation.
“Both volleyball and beach volleyball showed great results on TV. The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) was distributed to 131 countries around the world, generating 9,291 hours of broadcast time and an overall cumulative audience of 1.5 billion. The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, held last year in Hamburg, Germany, was broadcasted to 112 countries. These are great results and we hope for more of the same in 2020!”
