FIVB commits to further investment in its athletes

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 24, 2020 – The FIVB Athletes’ Commission held fruitful discussions this week as the FIVB committed to supporting pivotal initiatives that will ensure even greater support is provided to athletes.

Previously, the FIVB Board of Administration approved a motion, put forward by the Athletes’ Commission, to create an FIVB Players Fund that will take a percentage of the revenue generated from international transfer fees and reinvest it back into supporting athletes. The fund will cover various projects, such as educational programmes, legal support and post-career development.

In addition, the members of the Athletes’ Commission discussed other important topics on the agenda in detail, including the FIVB Athletes’ Commission election process for the next Olympic cycle (2021-2024). The election is due to take place later this year.

Commenting on the success of the meeting, FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° stated:

“Athletes are at the very heart of the FIVB. They are what makes our sport so popular around the world, and we are committed to supporting them and providing them with the best possible chance to succeed.

“I would like to congratulate the Athletes’ Commission on their tremendous work and the excellent initiatives they have developed. The athletes’ viewpoint is imperative to the direction of our work, and the Commission is the key channel of communication. We will continue to welcome the Commission’s ideas and opinions as we endeavour to make sure that the athlete voice is heard and well represented in the FIVB.”

The FIVB also pledged its commitment to working with the Athletes’ Commission to boost the FIVB’s e-learning platform for athletes. The platform will cover a range of topics, from athlete wellbeing, to career management and post-career opportunities. It will also educate athletes on the new World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code, which comes into effect on 1 January 2021.

In April 2019, as part of the FIVB’s commitment to clean sport, the International Federation launched e-learning courses on the prevention of competition manipulation to ensure the integrity of all of its international competitions. Since anti-doping and prevention of manipulation courses were made compulsory for athletes, coaches, referees and FIVB officials, more than 6,000 participants have successfully completed the course.
