Ibrahimovic, who went on to score 10 goals in 18 Serie A games, had the option to extend his deal.
According to Sky Sports, the 38-year-old is close to agreeing another year in Milan with his wages believed to be increasing by £40,000 per week.
Speaking on his return to Italy on Saturday night, Ibrahimovic said: “Finally everything is in place and finally I can return to where I feel at home.”
He later told Milan’s website: “As I’ve always said, I’m not here to be a mascot.
“I’m here to bring results and to help the team, the coach and the squad return to where Milan should be.
“We had a great last six months but we haven’t won anything.
“This year I’ve got the chance to be here from the start so we’ve got to continue like we were, working hard and sacrificing ourselves to reach our goals.”
Ibrahimovic helped Milan to a sixth-place finish and a spot in this season’s Europa League.
And upon his return to the San Siro it appears he confirmed his shirt number will change from 21 to 11.
During his first Milan stint, between 2010-2012, he wore the No11 jersey.
And a video he uploaded on Instagram reveals the forward showing off a brand new shirt with the same number.
In his first term at Manchester United, Ibrahimovic wore the No9.
But he then switched to No10 the following season after Wayne Rooney left.
