ATLETICO MADRID are in Lisbon to face off against RB Leipzig tonight in the Champions League quarter-finals.
However, Leipzig be going into the last eight of the competition without Timo Werner.
Nobody else in the Leipzig team scored at the same rate as Werner with 24-year-old scoring 95 goals in his four years at the club.
Why isn’t Timo Werner playing for RB Leipzig against Atletico Madrid tonight?
Werner is not playing for Atletico because he signed with Chelsea on the 18 June and has already moved to London.
He had already forgone the chance to compete in the latter stages of the Champions League and the club did not have any other choice but to respect the players decision.
His move not to compete is a controversial one, garnering criticism from former players like Stefan Effenberg who accused him of letting his former club down.
The Guardian reported that his agent came out in support of him, claiming that Werner signing a contract and then returning to Lepizig after the holidays was not something he wanted.
He said: ”It would have been anything but a good start for Timo at his new club if he had returned to Leipzig after his holidays to prepare for the restart of the Champions League,”
Karlheinz Forster continued: ”All involved parties decided that he will move to Chelsea on 1 July and not in mid or late August.”
