West Ham reject controversial Dimitri Payet transfer with Moyes keen to buy a striker instead

WEST HAM have rejected the chance to bring Dimitri Payet back to the club this month.

The Hammers were approached to see if they were interested in the prospect of striking a deal for the 32-year-old Marseille playmaker.

But David Moyes rejected the opportunity because what he really wants this month is a centre-forward.

In Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals, Moyes believes he has enough attacking midfielders in his squad at the London Stadium.

Instead he is desperate to bring in a player to operate alongside Sebastian Haller in attack as the club fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Ideally that player would be someone more nippy and mobile than the target man, providing the perfect foil for Haller to strike a partnership with.

The problem for Moyes is there is a shortage of players available who would fit that bill.

The Scot may have to soldier on until the end of the season using jack of all trades Michail Antonio in that role.

Antonio has become vital for the Hammers as the only player with genuine pace to scare opponents, but he has been blighted by muscle injuries this season.

The Irons were torn apart on Wednesday night in a 4-1 hammering at Leicester.

Meanwhile, West Ham will have to battle on without Felipe Anderson, who has been ruled out for weeks with a fresh injury.
