However, he stepped down from the managerial side of things to focus on playing after Anderlecht endured their worst start to a season since 1998-99.

Frank Vercauteren took over as head coach, but endured a frosty relationship with Kompany, according to local reports.

Vercauteren has now left Anderlecht.

Kompany will take over as head coach once again as he aims to bring a Pep Guardiola-style of play to the team.

Anderlecht will release a statement at 5pm BST to explain the situation.

ETIHAD LEGEND

Former centre-back Kompany won four Premier League titles at Man City – two of which were under Guardiola.

Kompany also won four League Cups and two FA Cups during his time at the Etihad, where he became a legend.

His wonder-goal against Leicester late in 2018-19 to help secure the title in his last season at the club will go down in Etihad folklore.

After leaving City – with over 350 appearances to his name – Kompany took the job as player-manager at Anderlecht, his first-ever club.

But after an horrific start – the club’s worst in over 20 years – he stepped down.

Kompany played just 15 of Anderlecht’s 29 league games last season in a season cut short due to coronavirus.

Anderlecht are currently third in the Juliper Pro League with four points from their opening two matches.

And Kompany was in the stands for the 3-1 win over STVV on Sunday as he prepared to take the top job.
