Tottenham star Son becomes the first Asian player to score 50 Premier League goals after late winner at Aston Villa

TOTTENHAM star Heung-min Son set a new Premier League record after bagging his first goal of the contest at Aston Villa.

The South Korean superstar pounced on the rebound after his penalty was initially saved before sealing the match by punishing Bjorn Engel’s error to hand his side a crucial 3-2 victory.

It took his season’s tally to nine but his first strike ensured he became the first Asian player to reach 50 Premier League goals.

Son, 27, has needed 151 matches to reach the impressive milestone meaning he is averaging a goal every three matches.

The forward is by far the most recognised Asian football in England’s top flight and is regarded as a hero in his native career.

Previously it was Manchester United’s Park Ji-sung that was the biggest star after scoring 19 goals and 21 assists in 154 Premier League appearances.

Ex-Newcastle midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has scored 15 times while former Leicester man Shinji Okazaki scored 14 in 114 matches.

Shinji Kagawa made huge headlines when he left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United in 2012 but only found the net six times.

Spurs’ win lifts them up to fifth in the league and Son was quick to praise his side’s character.

He said after the game: “We were 1-0 down so we showed our character and we didn’t give up.

“I felt bad because I had a couple of chances to score but I got the winning goal which makes me very happy and I think the lads deserved the win.”
