TOTTENHAM are on the verge of completing a shock move for former Southend goalkeeper Teddy Smith, according to reports.
The 24-year-old has been without a club since being released by the Shrimpers last summer – but did feature as a trialist for a Spurs reserve side against Dulwich Hamlet last summer.
Teddy Smith is on the verge of a shock move to Spurs
A move failed to materialise at the time, but according to Football Insider, Spurs have gone back in for the former England youth international.
Hugo Lloris recently returned from a long-term injury, with Paulo Gazzaniga having deputised for over three months.
And the Lilywhites brought Michel Vorm back to the club in October, to offer further back up after Lloris’ injury.
Youngsters Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman have both featured on the bench for the first-team this season.
But with Austin now having joined Danish side Viborg on loan, Spurs chiefs appear to be moving for extra cover.
Smith made his senior debut for Southend in League Two in the 2014-15 season and was an unused substitute in the playoff final as the Shrimpers sealed promotion.
The academy graduate made his proper breakthrough two seasons later, making 19 League One appearances in the 2016-17 season.
He swiftly fell back down the pecking order though, making only one outing last season in the EFL Trophy.
After his release at the end of last season, manager at the time Kevin Bond said: “Ted’s an excellent trainer and a great boy but he needs to be playing regular first-team football which I have no doubt he will find.”
One of the goalkeepers he was usurped by was fellow academy kid Nathan Bishop.
And he too has been on the move to the Premier League’s top six this season, having joined Manchester United earlier today.
