COUNT down the hours, Premier League football is finally about to be back on our screens.
After a three-month lockdown, Aston Villa vs Sheffield United and Manchester City vs Arsenal get us back underway tonight.
Rashford, Aguero and Kane all make our top five PL strikers – but who’s No1?
With nine games remaining for most clubs, there’s still plenty to play for – even if Liverpool have all-but clinched their first top-flight crown in 30 years.
As well as dogged fight for the European places, there’s an almighty relegation battle brewing lower down the standings.
As we prepare to welcome back the Premier League, SunSport have been ranking the top five players in every position.
Finally, we come down to the last position in our series… the strikers.
1. HARRY KANE
Harry Kane is the Premier League’s best striker, when fit
WHEN fit and firing, the Tottenham and England man is unquestionably the best striker in the Premier League.
In terms of natural finishing, Kane can’t be beaten – instinctively knowing where the goal is at all times.
Whether it’s a thunderous penalty, a well-placed header, right-place-right-time tap-in or long-range screamer, Kane has it all in his armoury.
The Three Lions skipper has had his 2019-20 season ruined by injuries, but has still managed 11 goals and will be crucial to Spurs’ hopes of climbing up from eighth in the table to secure a European spot.
2. SERGIO AGUERO
Sergio Aguero is arguably the best striker in Premier League history
IN terms of longevity and consistency, Aguero is arguably the Premier League’s best-ever striker – if not the best on current form.
Aguero is still a tremendous finisher and still strikes fear into the hearts of opposing defenders.
But in his prime, the Argentine star was utterly unstoppable and has been a key reason why Manchester City have managed to dominate English football for the better part of a decade.
Despite arguably being past his best at 32, Aguero has still found the net every 88 minutes, in scoring 16 goals this season – a simply sensational stat.
3. ROBERTO FIRMINO
Roberto Firmino’s presence as a playmaker and scorer gets him No3 on our list
WHEN you think of strikers, you tend to think goals – and rightly so.
But in Firmino’s case, he has been one the key men in leading Liverpool to what will surely be their first-ever Premier League title this summer.
Firmino may not be a prolific goalscorer, but that’s intentional – as his modus operandi is to bring Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane into the game with a series of flicks, tricks, feints and killer final balls.
Let’s put it this way – there’s a reason the Reds’ wingers are constantly in the race for the Golden Boot.
Despite his “pass-first” mindset, Firmino has still scored eight times in the Premier League, to go with an impressive seven assists.
4. MARCUS RASHFORD
Marcus Rashford is developing into a superb all-around striker
THE future certainly looks bright for England with both Kane and Rashford on the books.
Rashford has been in superb form for Manchester United this season, finding the net 14 times in the league alone.
Quick, skilful, more than willing to take on his defender and with an instinctive eye for goal, Rashford is quickly becoming the full package.
If Rashford can stay fit, there’s little doubt he can go on to be a genuine Premier League legend when it’s all said and done.
He’s been role model off the pitch too, forcing the Government into a policy U-turn on free school meals.
5. JAMIE VARDY
Jamie Vardy is still banging in the goals – and leads the Premier League Golden Boot race
IT was a straight fight for fifth between Vardy and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang… with the Leicester star just nicking it.
Aubameyang has scored 17 goals this season, to Vardy’s 19 – with the ex-England ace adding four assists, to the Arsenal man’s one.
There’s little doubt the Foxes star would be in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad if he hadn’t retired from international duty in 2018.
Vardy, of course, was also a huge factor in Leicester’s “Great Escape” of 2014-15, which quickly continued into the 5000/1 shot Premier League title in 2015-16.
Often underrated, Vardy is consistently in the leading pack in the race for the Golden Boot – and is comfortably ahead this year, set to become the oldest-ever winner of the top scoring gong on current pace…
