Son, 28, who became South Korea’s Player of the Year for the fifth time, has been on fire for the Premier League leaders this term.

The Tottenham star has scored 10 times in 12 Prem appearances for his club who have lost just once in the league so far this season.

And the attacker has developed into a fan favourite after netting 63 goals in 172 appearances following his 2015 £22million move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Fresh contract talks with the forward, who is reported to earn £150,000-a-week, have been hindered by the Covid pandemic

It is reported club officials are eager to tie the South Korea international down to a new five-year deal worth £200,000.

On Son’s current contract scenario Mourinho said: “How can you sign a new contract with a player? You don’t know what is going to happen next season,” he told reporters.

“You don’t know if you can offer the player a better contract than they have now. It’s a very strange moment.

“I just trust Sonny and Daniel Levy.

“I know that both want him to stay, if possible, for life, if possible until the end of the career.

“I see Sonny signing a new contract here, but I don’t press for something to happen now because probably it’s not the right moment.”

Son, whose current deal expires in June 2023 has developed a formidable partnership with team-mate Harry Kane.

Mourinho and his Tottenham team are aiming to win the club’s first ever Premier League title.
