Sky Sports ranks greatest English teams of all time – and Arsenal’s Invincibles don’t even make top five

ARSENAL’S Invincibles are the SIXTH best team in the history of English football.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville came to the controversial conclusion when they were asked to settle the age-old debate on Monday Night Football.

The Sky Sports duo ranked the top 12 sides by awarding points for the trophies won over a three-season period.

Bob Paisley’s Liverpool team from 1975/76 to 1977/78 secured the top spot after racking up a whopping 23 points.

He guided the Merseyside giants to two European Cups, two First Division titles, the Uefa Cup and the European Super Cup.

Liverpool narrowly beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s iconic Manchester United team from 2006/07 to 2008/09.

Fergie added Champions League, Premier League (3), League Cup and Club World Cup trophies to the Old Trafford silverware cabinet.

Neville claimed: “I don’t think Manchester United have ever had a team that had so many world-class players.

“They had eight or nine who were almost the best in their position. It was an unbelievable team. I think it was the greatest Manchester United team of all time.”

Liverpool’s squad from 1981/82 to 1983/84 finished in joint third thanks to the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen.

United’s squad from 1998/99 to 2000/01 that won the Champions League, three Prem titles, the FA Cup and the Intercontinental Cup also have 20 MNF points.

Nottingham Forest pipped Arsenal to the fifth spot after Brian Clough’s reign of dominance from 1977/78 to 1979/80.

In sixth place, it’s Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles that went 49 consecutive top-flight league games unbeaten from May 2003 to October 2004.

Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and Co won the Prem title twice and the FA Cup twice from 2001/02 until 2003/04.

Carragher said: “When I came up against that Arsenal team, sometimes I would be going  into  the game and my confidence wouldn’t be there because you didn’t feel like you could compete with them physically either.

“You knew they were better players than you but they were quicker and more powerful too.

“For a two or three year period, that was the best team I played against in the Premier Legaue.”

Of course, a list of the top teams in England would not be complete without Jose Mourinho.

The Special One’s Chelsea side are seventh with 13 MNF points from their glory days between 2004/05 to 2006/07.

Mourinho guided them two top-flight titles, but never managed to lift the Champions League with the Blues.

Next in line is Everton’s team from 1984/85 to 1986/87 that were guided to glory by Howard Kendall.

Tottenham have not won a trophy for over 12 years, but back in 1960 they were the team to beat.

Bill Nicholson’s Spurs side finished joint eighth with the Toffees in the MNF table.

Aston Villa’s squad from 1980/81 to 1982/83 finished joint 10th in the table with Manchester  United’s squad from 1965.

Last but not least, it’s Leeds’ squad that won the Fit Division, the FA Cup and the Fairs Cup between 1968 and 1970.
