RB LEIPZIG have trolled Tottenham as their astounding rise hits new heights with their first ever game in the Champions League KO stage.
The Bundesliga title challengers posted snaps of their dodgy stadium as a fifth-tier side in 2010 next to their hosts’ majestic venue tonight, and asked: “What have you done in the last 10 years, @SpursOfficial?”
The jibe went down with Tottenham fans about as well as VAR has in the Premier League this season.
Leipzig’s sudden emergence has certainly split opinion in Germany, where clubs traditionally develop via supporters rather than corporate funding.
And Spurs fans on social media leapt on that fierce divide as they answered Leipzig’s question about the past decade.
Replies included: “Not ruined football” .. “Not bought our success” … “Not relied on a drinks company to get anywhere” .. and “Oil money”.
Others pointed out Spurs reached last season’s Champions League final and “built the stadium your whole embarrassing tweet is about”.
But one Tottenham follower did tweet: “Hats of to you.. fortunately Spurs were never in the 5th division so we can’t match your successive promotions.”
Leipzig themselves defused the debate with an amusing meme, explaining their original post was light-hearted and adding: “Guess no one‘s in a funny mood tonight “
RB’S purchase of fifth-level side SSV Markranstadt a decade ago sparked a nationwide outcry, just like the company’s acquisition of Austrian top-flight team Salzburg had done in 2005.
But for all RB’s riches, Leipzig’s 32-yer-old coach Julian Nagelsmann has put together a team with few star names and no signings beyond the £20million mark.
And by the time they reached the Bundesliga in 2016, community pride and support had grown, partly as Leipzig, a major city in east Germany, had been without a top-division side 22 years.
But still their lack of history irks many traditionalists, with one football follower retorting today: “What have you done the past 100 years though???”
