Paul Scholes says Man Utd transfer target Dayot Upamecano is ‘type of defender club need’ despite Leipzig thrashing

PAUL SCHOLES has told Manchester United to sign Dayot Upamecano and claims he is the ‘type of defender’ his old club need.

The 22-year-old had the perfect chance to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last night when RB Leipzig travelled to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

But the French international did not exactly shine as his side suffered a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the Red Devils.

Nevertheless, speculation persists that United will soon press ahead with a move to bring Upamecano to the Premier League next summer.

And their legendary former midfielder Scholes believes they have to get a deal done.

And he even went as far to claim that the star is similar to fellow United icons Rio Ferdinand and Jaap Stam.

Scholes told BT Sport: “This is the type of defender I think United need, he’s very different to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

“He absolutely loves one-vs-ones, he loves getting down that channel because he knows he’s gonna beat them.

“It’s very much the same as what Rio used to do, what Jaap Stam used to do.

“It frees the rest of the team to worry about attacking play, because you know you’ve got a centre-half who is going to defend and he’ll do it all day.”

Before Wednesday’s game, Solskjaer refused to be drawn on a swoop for Upamecano, saying: “There’s always rumours and speculation about other players and Manchester United.

“I don’t want to comment on every player we’re linked to.

“Since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.”
