Own goal wins depressing Leyton Orient goal of the month competition after edging out two penalties

LEYTON ORIENT’S goal of the month competition sums up their season so far.

The O’s picked up an important win in their battle to beat relegation on Saturday by putting three past rock-bottom Stevenage.

It was one less than the total they bagged throughout the whole of January, leaving the supporters with little to choose when the club asked them to cast their votes.

They tweeted out a highlight package of three strikes alongside the caption: “It’s time to select your Goal of the Month for January 2020…”

But two of the goals came from the penalty spot and the other appeared to be a last minute own goal.

One fan correctly asked: “Why is Marv’s header not there but the two penalties are?”

A total of 238 fans voted on Twitter and the own goal, which was credited to Orient’s Ruel Sotiriou, won with 78.6 per cent of the vote.

Although it was certainly one for the dubious goal panel after his finish clearly took a huge deflection off the Newport defender before finding the top corner.

Fans summed up the situation on Twitter with one writing: “2 penalties and an own goal, how poor were we in January.”

Another added: “Desperate times when penalties are in there.”

Orient’s win at the weekend lifted them to 18th in League Two following their promotion from the National League.
