Newcastle looking to snap up Sunderland flop Fabio Borini on free transfer when Hellas Verona deal runs out in summer

NEWCASTLE are looking to snap up Sunderland flop Fabio Borini on a free transfer when his Hellas Verona deal runs out in the summer.

The Italian winger has made just nine appearances across all competitions this season, scoring two goals for Ivan Juric’s side.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Hellas Verona, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have all been tracking the 29-year-old.

Toon boss Steve Bruce has reportedly been eyeing a swoop for the Italian since last summer despite the striker spending five years at fierce rivals Sunderland from 2013.

Borini scored a modest 16 league goals during his three seasons at the Stadium of Light and frequently disappointed in the North East.

He argued that he was too often asked to play out of position on the wings and instructed to do more tracking back than attacking.

Magpies pans were left seething when the Italian scored a dramatic, late winner in a scintillating Tyne-Wear derby in 2013 and celebrated like a mad man in front of Black Cats fans.

The former Chelsea, Liverpool, Sunderland and Swansea City striker spent three years at AC Milan where he mustered just seven goals before being turfed out to Verona.

Newcastle are set to be on the market for a number of players with Mike Ashley on the verge of selling the Magpies for a knockdown £300million to a group led by Amanda Staveley.

The Toon will have the wealthiest owners in world football once the deal is completed with a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium involving Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the head of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, will become the new chairman.

The Saudi supremos will own 80 per cent of the club – with Staveley and the Reuben brothers evenly splitting the remaining 20 per cent.

Newcastle’s record transfer fee was the £40m they paid for Joelinton last July and SunSport considered how the club could line up with the £200m transfer investment from their billionaire backers.

Several big names have been linked with moves to St James’ Park including out of favour Barcelona striker Antoine Griezmann.

The Toon have reportedly made contact with Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly and PSG striker Edinson Cavani.

And according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, the Magpies want Philippe Coutinho to be one of several new signings this summer.

The 27-year-old had struggled to win over fans in Barcelona since joining from Liverpool for £142million in January 2018.
