Newcastle boss Bruce to meet with Mike Ashley to finalise transfer shortlist with just £20m to spend in January

STEVE BRUCE will meet with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in the next few days to discuss January transfer targets.

The Toon Army are yet to take the plunge into the January transfer market but are in dire need of reinforcements as their injury curse continues.

Ashley spent over £55million in the summer on Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruce has around £20m to spend this month.

The Magpies boss is keen to strengthen across the pitch but is specifically after a striker and winger.

They have been heavily-linked with RB Liepizig’s Ademola Lookman but no arrivals are imminent.

And Bruce insists he will only splash the cash on players who can improve the team – instead of just bringing in bodies to make up the numbers.

He said: “As I’ve said all along, if there’s something that can really make us better and they’re available, then we’ll try to act, and I’ll ask the owner, who was very supportive in the summer.

“Let’s see, let’s see what we can get. But I’ve said all along, I won’t just bring players in for the sake of it. Most of the injuries we’ve picked up are minor, so they will be back in two or three weeks.

“I’m not one for just bringing in players for the sake of it. They’ve got to improve us and if that can happen, then I’ll have that conversation with the owner over the next couple of days.

Quizzed if he expects Ashley to be as supportive as in the summer, Bruce added: “He was very supportive in the summer and he’s been very supportive of me full stop, so yes, I expect that.”

Bruce was asked whether Sergio Aguero – who became the Premier League’s highest ever foreign goalscorer after taking his tally to 177 yesterday against Aston Villa – was the best striker the league has seen.

But the Newcastle manager said nobody could ever compare to Toon hero Alan Shearer.

He added: “I can say it now as I class him as a pal – Shearer’s record is the best. Aguero is still around 100 behind him, remarkable.

“Newcastle’s No 9 can have that. He’s the best we have seen in the Premier League for sure.”
