MONTPELLIER midfielder Junior Sambia is in intensive care with what is feared to be “severe” coronavirus symptoms.

The 23-year-old would be the first Ligue 1 player to contract the virus if his condition proves to be Covid-19.

Sambia was admitted to hospital on Monday morning and then placed in intensive care on Thursday, according to l’Equipe.

The symptoms are said to be consistent with those of Covid-19 but Montpellier refused to give further detail and released a statement yesterday.

It read: “Following digestive and respiratory problems, one of our players has been hospitalised in Montpellier for two days in a specialised environment to benefit from appropriate care.”

No other player in France’s top flight has had a confirmed case of coronavirus so far, according to French outlet RMCSport.

But South Korean Hyun-jun Suk, who plays for Ligue 2 side Troyes, became the first professional player in France to contract the virus on March 13.

But thankfully, he was on the mend by the end of the month.

France currently has 159,467 confirmed coronavirus cases with 21,889 deaths.

Frenchman Sambia is originally from Lyon but chose to stay in Montpellier during lockdown.

He is a defensive midfielder and has played 22 games in all competitions for Montpellier this season, scoring once.
