Man Utd set to hand Mason Greenwood new long-term contract in 2021 after breaking into Solskjaer’s first-team

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to hand Mason Greenwood a new long-term contract next year, according to reports.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the Red Devils are keen to tie down the whizkid striker, 19, on a five-year deal.

The England star only agreed new terms back in October 2019 but such has been his impressive rise that United are said to be keen to reward him already.

Greenwood has been a first-team regular for much of 2020, and even equaled a United goals record set by George Best and Wayne Rooney.

He also became the first player to score ten Premier League goals in a season as a teenager since Romelu Lukaku in 2012/13.

A mixture of injuries and off-field issues has seen Greenwood slow down slightly this term, with the Red Devils academy graduate scoring just once in nine Prem appearances.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even admitted this week that Greenwood hasn’t been hitting the expected levels so far.

He said: “Definitely the belief has grown, because we know we’ve got players – Marcus [Rashford], Anthony [Martial], Mason [Greenwood] – they’ve not really been on fire this season and when we get them scoring more goals, I’m sure we’ll look more of a threat.

But Greenwood’s new deal is a mark of how highly he is still rated at United – with Andy Cole backing him to become the best striker in the world.

He told The Target Men Podcast: “I believe Mason Greenwood has all the attributes and all of the potential to go on to become one of the world’s best strikers within the next five years.

“I think if Mason continues to work hard and keeps his head down, he will achieve whatever he wants to achieve in football.

“I’m very excited to see him in a Manchester United shirt for years to come.”
