And they followed that up with the addition of 20-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Southend for an undisclosed fee.

Both players instantly declared their joy after penning contracts at Old Trafford, and the pair were still all smiles as they got to work at the club’s Carrington training base on Friday.

Fernandes, 25, wrapped up warmly for his introduction, attempting to beat the chill with a black snood and gloves.

And he appeared to have instantly hit it off with countryman Diogo Dalot, who gave him a lift to training, and Brazilians Fred and Andreas Pereira as they were snapped during a warm embrace.

The new No.18 could make his debut tomorrow against Wolves, although it remains to be seen whether he will start or come off the bench.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “He’s fit enough to play and he’ll be involved definitely.

“He’ll be in the squad. Let’s get the training out of the way today.

“He’s had of course a few hectic days now and even with his little daughter’s three-year birthday yesterday, so I don’t know how much he will be involved, but he’s in the squad.”

Meanwhile Bishop got the chance to impress United’s goalie coach Richard Hartis and fellow stopper Sergio Romero, who gave a big thumbs-up to the cameras after working with the youngster.

After finally sealing his move, Bishop said: “The opportunity to join Manchester United is a dream come true.

“This club has a great record of developing goalkeepers and I cannot wait to work with the coaches here to improve every single day.

“I want to take the chance to thank everyone at Southend United for everything they have done for me throughout my time there.

“Without their support, this move would not have been possible.”
