Man Utd ‘eye free Hakan Calhanoglu transfer on five-year deal with talks over AC Milan extension stalling’

MANCHESTER UNITED are eyeing up a free transfer for AC Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu, according to reports.

The Italian giants have been locked in talks with the Turkish international, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

They have so far failed to find an agreement, however, with the midfielder understood to be ‘frustrated’ by Milan’s £54,000-a-week offer.

And according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Man United are willing to offer the playmaker a five-year contract to come to Old Trafford.

The proposal would also represent a nice pay boost for the ex-Bayer Leverkusen ace.

Gazzetta also claim, however, that Calhanoglu would prefer to stay in Italy.

The 26-year-old has had a flying start to the season, scoring four goals and assisting the same amount in his first eight games.

And Milan will re-open talks with his representatives next month.

While Calhanoglu’s qualities aren’t in doubt, a United pursuit may leave fans scratching their heads.

Pundits and supporters have already wondered how boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can fit Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and new recruit Donny van de Beek into the same team – with the latter yet to start a Premier League game.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher said: “It’s better for the team having Fred and McTominay in there.

“But a Fred and McTominay centre-midfield is not good enough for Manchester United to challenge for the Premier League.

“Fernandes is their man in the No10 position but I don’t know how Ole can continue not to pick a £90million signing.

“It’s not easy for the manager but at some stage he will get back into the team. But for me Pogba and Fernandes will never work.”
