Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal bottom of points per wage bill for Premier League season with Sheffield Utd flying at top

MANCHESTER UNITED, Chelsea and Arsenal are in the bottom three of the Premier League’s points-per-wage bill for the 2019/20 season.

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils boast the highest wage bill in the top-flight, but it hasn’t been money well spent in stats obtained by the news outlet.

Sheffield United top the Premier League’s value for money list this season

They have Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side – who have a wage bill of £332million – in 20th spot.

United picked up 66 points this term which was enough to see them finish third in the Premier League, but they averaged just 0.2 points for every £1m spent on staff costs.

This means that United spent £5m for every point they picked up.

In contrast, Sheffield United have the lowest wage bill in the Premier League at £40m, but after their stunning season, they sit top of the value for money table.

Chris Wilder guided the Blades to a ninth-placed finish with 54 points, and due to their impressive campaign, they averaged 1.3 points per £1m.

FOOTING THE BILL

Sitting just above United is Chelsea, who finished in 19th with their wage bill coming in at £286m, meaning they forked out £4.3m per point.

Arsenal finished just one place above Sheffield United in the top-flight this campaign, and because of their awful league season, they are in 18th spot in the points-per-wage bill list.

The Gunners – who have a wage bill of £232m – spent £4.1m per point.

Manchester City round up the bottom four as they boast the second highest wage bill in the division.

With wages coming in at £316m, the Citizens spent £3.9m per point, with their 81 points seeing them finish second in the Premier League.

Champions Liverpool are in 13th spot, but it was money well spent for Jurgen Klopp’s men who secured their first title since 1990.

Leicester – who finished fifth in the league table – are the highest placed team in the value for money list, as they slotted in between Southampton and Watford in eighth place.
