MANCHESTER UNITED and Liverpool officially have more supporters in London than in their own cities, according to a recent study.
For decades there’s been the old-fashioned joke that United supporters are all southerners – but they’re not the only ones it seems.
Man Utd, Liverpool and City have more fans in London than their own cities
Both Man Utd and Liverpool both boast more fans in the capital city rather than the North-West of England – and even Manchester City fall under the same category.
According to Casumo, United have 1.44million fans who support them from their Manchester home.
But they boast a whopping 2.18m London-based supporters – a staggering 740,000 more.
Just up the M62, in Liverpool, there are 677,000 Reds fans.
But in London, there are 893,000 Kop followers – a difference of 226,000.
It’s a similar story at the Etihad, with just 512,000 City fans coming from Manchester.
That number is comprehensively beaten by the capital city following, at 637,000.
How the results were formulated…
- Random sample of 50,000 accounts from every Premier League club’s Twitter following.
- Noted down the hometown locations in the biographies of these accounts.
- Cleaned the locations to account for boroughs of cities and matched each city to its country.
- Extrapolated the raw city counts to reflect each club’s full Twitter following.
- Note: As people can have multiple Twitter accounts and so can companies, some cities will have more Twitter followers than their population.
Meanwhile, the report also revealed Arsenal are the most-followed of the London teams at 2.46m.
That figure is nearly DOUBLE that of Chelsea, the second-best supported, at 1.46m.
Tottenham are miles adrift of the neighbours at a mere 652,000.
