Man City will build David Silva statue outside Etihad Stadium to honour departing superstar after glittering career

MANCHESTER CITY have announced they will build a statue to honour their departing superstar David Silva.

And a pitch at the City Football Academy will also be named after the Spanish World Cup winner – adorned with a mosaic of one of his finest moments.

Silva, 34, spent 10 years at the Etihad but his appearance off the bench in the Champions League defeat to Lyon on Saturday proved to be his farewell.

Even so, City were determined his contribution – which saw him win 11 major trophies at the club – will be remembered for many years to come.

His statue will be unveiled outside the stadium next summer alongside the one which is currently being built for former skipper Vincent Kompany.

Meanwhile the dedication of the new pitch – featuring an image from the famous 6-1 derby win at Old Trafford in 2011 – will take place before then.

Chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak said: “David has put his stamp on the team, on this club, it’s history and even the Premier League as a whole.

“In doing so he has been instrumental to the beautiful football philosophy you see today. He was the start of it. He has inspired everyone around him.

“David’s statue will act as a lasting reminder of the wonderful moments that he gave us, not only as an incredible footballer but as an inspiring ambassador who represented this club with great dignity.”

Silva did achieve one milestone on Saturday as he entered the top 10 on the all-time appearance  list for City – equalling Willie Donachie’s tally of 436.
